STEAMpop Signature Projects
Collaborating with communities large and small, artists, designers and other creative practitioners, we develop high-quality experiences that combine STEM concepts with the beauty of the handmade. Our work contributes to contemporary creative practice and exploration of transdisciplinary learning research across the globe.

Lumifold
Lumifold focuses on an ancient paper folding model, exploring and applying geometry principles within the Origami Sekkei (mathematical folding)technique.
The Lumifold experience results in the creation of a stunning lamp which is an expression of biomimicry, elementary symmetries and iteration.

Mobifold
Here we play with the mysterious Möbius Strip to explore the wonder inherent in this magical mathematical object. Using patterned papers, we fold and intertwine each strip into small sculptures or unique wearables.
This investigation of surface, edges and patterning provides a new experience in understanding how mathematical concepts influence art and design as well as a contemplative creative moment of pure making.

Binary Beauty
Binary Beauty asks makers to engage in a range of surface patterning and folding based on the mathematical concepts of binary, probability and symmetry.
The resulting curved construction demonstrates a playful expression of biomimicry in the creation of physical beetle or bug-like forms. Depending on the making context, each piece can be illuminated via LED paper circuitry or simple LED units. They can be enjoyed as individual sconces or all together in a swarm!

Hungry Birds
Hungry Birds is where paper engineering meets mechanical movement, electronics and coding. Participants enter the world of math-making via an exploration into hyperbolic geometry and interactive illumination!
STEAMpop extends their flat to form experience by encouraging our thinking hands to create a sensor activated nest of bird-like forms that glow and move when disturbed.
Hungry Birds is intelligent, witty, accessible and fun.

Bucky Balls
This experience uses paper annuli shapes to create a range of three-dimensional objects that culminate in various representations of a sphere. Drawing on principles laid down by architect, inventor and visionary Buckminster Fuller, the workshop relies on the willingness of participants to:
- experiment, play and construct with the annulus shape.
- explore and discuss the inherent geometry in relation to the materialisation of structural rigidity or flexibility.
- Consider color and pattern in the creation of a playful representation of the maths.
The balls have many applications and some mysterious inner qualities to be discovered after making!
